Pete Stauber, U.S. Congressman representing Minnesota’s 8th district, marked the 50th anniversary of the Edmund Fitzgerald’s final voyage with a series of posts on November 10, 2025. Stauber was joined by Rep. Tom Tiffany during visits to significant sites connected to the ship’s history in Superior, Wisconsin.

In his first post at 18:23 UTC, Stauber wrote: "I’m here with @RepTiffany at Burlington Northern Railroad Dock No. 1 in Superior, WI, where the Edmund Fitzgerald left on its final voyage 50 years ago."

Later that day at 19:29 UTC, he posted from another location along the historic route: "I’m at Wisconsin Point with @RepTiffany where the state line between MN & WI runs in the center of the canal. 1/3 of all Duluth harbor traffic leaves through this canal, including the final voyage of the Edmund Fitzgerald in 1975."

Concluding his commemoration at 20:20 UTC, Stauber visited a new memorial and reflected on local heritage and loss: "Stopped by the newly minted plaque honoring the Edmund Fitzgerald. The Range, Duluth Superior Port, and shipping are our way of life. These men died living it. In Congress, I’ll keep fighting for them."

The Edmund Fitzgerald sank on November 10, 1975 during a storm on Lake Superior after departing from Superior, Wisconsin—a tragedy that remains significant for communities around Duluth and Superior due to their strong ties to shipping and port industries.

Stauber has represented Minnesota's 8th District since replacing Rick Nolan in Congress in 2019 and previously served as St. Louis County Commissioner from 2013 to 2019. Born in Duluth in 1966 and currently residing in Hermantown, Stauber is an alumnus of Lake Superior State University.
