University of Minnesota Extension issued the following announcement on March 31.
Hey, clovers!
Emma S., Wright County
My name is Emma and I am a current Minnesota 4-H State Ambassador. This past month has been filled with a mountain of events. Our Minnesota 4-H'ers have been busy all month.
From March 19-23, six Minnesota youth were selected to represent the Minnesota delegation in our National 4-H Conference, the first one in-person since the pandemic started. Five of these delegates were from our very own ambassador team, and we can’t wait to see what they’ve brought back from the conference! These six delegates had the opportunity to meet different youth from across the country, ranging from Florida to the Mariana Islands.
This conference was an opportunity for different federal agencies to present issues and get solutions from a youth perspective. Our six delegates from Minnesota partnered with the following agencies:
- National Institute of Food & Agriculture (NIFA)
- Institute of Food Security and Nutrition
- The National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA)
- Office of STEM Engagement
- Smithsonian National Museum of American History (NMAH)
- Office of Education & Outreach
- Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service (APHIS)
- National Detector Dog Training Center
- United States Senate Committee on Agriculture, Nutrition, & Forestry, U.S. Senate
YELLO
That wasn’t all that was happening this month, because as some of you may know, Youth Exploring Leadership and Learning Opportunities (YELLO) is just around the corner! Our ambassadors spent their spring retreat this past month planning out this summer’s YELLO. Be on the lookout for registration information. This year’s YELLO is sure going to be a journey.
Becoming a State Ambassador
To add to all the amazing things that happened this month, there is one that may just take the cake - 2022-23 Minnesota State Ambassador Applications are out! Thinking of applying? Do it! From a current ambassador, I will confidently say that it was the best decision I have ever made. I was so nervous when applying, but in the end it was 100% worth it! I encourage all youth out there who are thinking about it to do it.
True Leaders in Service
This April, the Minnesota 4-H State Ambassadors invite 4-H members and alumni across the nation to join in pledging our hands to larger service! True Leaders in Service engages youth in service and civic engagement within their communities, counties, tribal nations and states.
The month-long community service challenge kicks-off on April 1 and ends with the National 4-H Day of Service on April 30. The Minnesota 4-H State Ambassadors are addressing food insecurity across the state. We are focusing our energy into identifying ways to increase access to high quality, nutritious and affordable food for Minnesota communities.
We encourage you to do a project that has a positive impact on food insecurity in your community. There are many ways you can complete a community service project. Below are some great ideas for projects you can complete during the month of April.
- Volunteer at a soup kitchen
- Pack meals at a food shelf
- Pack backpacks with meals to be distributed at schools
- Start a Little Free Food Pantry
- Donate to your local food shelf
- Work with a community garden program to plant, grow and harvest vegetables and fruit
