Stillwater Middle School issued the following announcement.
Racism and systemic injustice live right here in our community, just as they do in communities across our state and country. For years we’ve been working behind the scenes to develop strategies to improve access, equity and opportunities for all students. But recent events have made it painfully clear that we are all falling short. We can and we must do better.
We are so proud of our students, families and alumni who are speaking up to bravely share their stories and experiences in our schools and in our community. The stories are painful, emotional and powerful. We are listening. We are learning. And we are following your lead.
Based on community feedback in recent weeks, we’ve taken the following action:
- We’ve met with current and alumni students to discuss an open letter they authored and consider ways we can work together to move the district forward.
- Administrators and school board members are actively listening to our Black, Indigenous and People of Color (BIPOC) students and families as part of virtual “circles,” which are taking place each week. Based on restorative practices, the circles give individuals a safe place to share their stories.
- A district cultural liaison is being hired to advocate for equity and inclusion, and empower and support families to promote student academic success.
- We’re partnering with an equity consultant to consider where we are as a community and where we want to go together. The consultant will offer a neutral, unbiased look at our district and help build bridges between our staff and community.
- We’re expanding our professional development efforts to ensure all of our staff have meaningful and relevant training in cultural competency.
- We’re ensuring every decision we make is made with equity in mind - from where we spend our money to what curriculum we teach.
- We’re actively embedding the strategies of Reimagine Minnesota into our work here in Stillwater. Read more about Reimagine Minnesota and its 9 strategies to “See All; Serve All and Support All.”
We cannot do this work alone, nor should we. We ask that our students, families and community members walk alongside us in finding solutions to eliminate our achievement and opportunity gaps. We will not stop until every student feels safe, welcome and successful.
