A man’s death while in Maplewood Police custody has raised eyebrows and is being investigated by the Minnesota Bureau of Criminal Apprehension( BCA), according to KARE 11.
In the incident, an officer is said to have pulled over a vehicle at 5:35 in the morning near White Bear Avenue North and Lydia Avenue. He suspected the man took propane tanks from a local gas station. The officer said he confirmed the man was indeed the perpetrator so he arrested him. But things went left after the person experienced medical issues while in the squad car, and told the officer he ingested drugs.
The police officer then called an ambulance and the person was pronounced dead shortly after being rushed to the hospital.
BCA is now evaluating body camera footage.
The city also released a statement and said, according to KARE 11, “It is important to note that there was no physical struggle between the officer and the detained suspect, and medical attention was summoned when the suspect’s condition was observed.”
