SHRINERS HOSPITALS FOR CHILDREN: It’s National Nutrition Month – let’s "Eat Right, Bite by Bite"

Healthy

Shriners Hospitals for Children issued the following announcement on March 12

In March we celebrate National Nutrition Month! The focus this year is "Eat Right, Bite by Bite," which centers on the philosophy that every small healthy change, or bite, is a positive stride in the right direction. No change is too small and bite by bite these changes can add up over time to help create a healthier lifestyle. Think about ways to make changes in your everyday routine and then consider how attainable goals can help you stay on track and create a lasting impact over time. Starting healthy and mindful eating routines as children can create a positive relationship with food to last a lifetime.

Our nutritional counseling here at Shriners Hospitals for Children — Boston encompasses a variety of nutritional needs. We work with patients and families, not only to understand the reasoning behind our recommendations, but also to see where potential modifications can be made. We teach our families how to make these changes fit their preferences and lifestyles. Our goal is for patients and families to use the nutritional education and tools we share to make better choices, and work towards eating in a mindful way, especially as they move towards outpatient care or a return home. We also host planting and harvest parties in our patio wellness garden to give families a hands-on experience. We hope to inspire a healthy eating lifestyle that not only meets their nutritional needs but also is flavorful, enjoyable and sustainable over time.

There are simple ideas for how to make changes in your everyday routine that will promote a healthy lifestyle. Consider these tips:

  • Bring your lunch to work
  • Make time to move throughout the day: Walk, ride a bike or take an exercise class
  • Drink more water
  • Increase your intake of fruits and vegetables
  • Take time for yourself, whether it’s to read a book, talk with a friend or meditate
With any of these changes, set a realistic and specific goal to get started, such as aiming to make the changes two to three days per week. Once this is accomplished, start increasing your goal until it becomes a part of your typical routine. And remember, by "eating right, bite by bite," you will be on your way to a healthier you!
