State and local taxpayers account for approximately 95 percent of the $13 billion Minnesota public schools acquire throughout a school year, according to the Twin Cities Pioneer Express.

About $650 million in 2017 came from federal money, while the rest came from taxpayers. The news agency reported that state resources make up 65 percent of revenue, while local resources make up 30 percent and only 5 percent is federal.

Every other year, the state Legislature sets the state's education budget, but there are times when the Legislature still has to go back and make adjustments, and local school officials also have to make adjustments each year, according to the news agency.

On average, about $14,000 is spent on each student per year, the news agency reported. More than half of that money goes toward teachers' salaries.
