The Washington County Board is slated to discuss a reduction of penalties for late payments on property taxes in a meeting scheduled for April 28.
Property Tax payments are due on May 15 but this effort would allow an extension on the deadline to July 15 for the first-half payment for those who have been financially affected by the COVID-19 pandemic.
“We hope this provides some relief for small businesses that have been closed since the middle of March and for those homeowners who have been furloughed, laid off or have had hours reduced,” Board Chairman Fran Mion said, according to the Twin Cities Pioneer Press.
These plans only include non-escrow properties with less than $50,000 due in 2020. They are asking for a 60-day extension for commercial, residential and rural land properties. This plan excludes taxes collected by escrow payments made by lenders, banks or mortgage companies, which are still due by May 15.
Miron said, according to the Twin Cities Pioneer Press, that those able to pay their taxes on time and by the May 15 deadline are urged to do so to continue to support the schools and country deal with the coronavirus pandemic.
“If anyone can pay on in time or even in advance, it’s going to help cash flow," according to the Twin Cities Pioneer Press. "They could be part of this solution. We want people to understand and know that we are considering relief, but we also want people to know that they can do their part as well.”
