Thomas Edison High School issued the following announcement on Dec. 4.
Students in Thomas Edison High School’s EASYpro class just finished up an exciting experimental design project! After learning the ins and outs of aquaponics, each student got to pick a topic that they were curious about and design their own experiment as a way to learn something new!
1) 9th grader Jaquahn and 10th grader Marlyn wanted to know how different colors of light would affect the growth of plants. They grew pepper plants under white, green, and blue lights and were surprised to find that the plant under white light was the only one to grow!
2) 11th graders Jorge and Jabari wanted to learn more about the chemistry of the water. They were curious if the nutrient levels varied in different parts of the system so they tested water from the highest level grow bed (left) and water from the fish tank (right). They were excited to see that while the differences were small, the nutrient levels did in fact change!
3) 12th grader Ramel wondered if the growing media affected how quickly a plant cutting would grow new roots. He was disappointed that the cuttings he planted in lava rock all died, but happy to see that the soil was a successful choice!
