Minnesota State Representative Patti Anderson addressed constituents on April 9 about new legislative developments regarding taxes and government accountability.

Anderson highlighted a bill introduced by Representative Aisha Gomez that would establish a one percent wealth tax on individuals and trusts with assets in Minnesota exceeding $10 million. She said this measure, if passed, would make Minnesota the first state to implement such a tax. The bill requires taxpayers to calculate the value of all their assets located in Minnesota, including property, businesses, and retirement accounts. Anderson expressed concerns that the legislation could lead to capital flight as wealthy residents might leave for states with lower taxes. She also noted potential impacts on farmers, small business owners, and retirees who may own valuable assets but lack sufficient income to pay the proposed tax.

Anderson said that California is considering a similar wealth tax but at a higher threshold of $1 billion. She questioned what effects such policies might have on Minnesota’s economy if implemented locally.

The representative also discussed recent findings from the Office of the Legislative Auditor regarding fraud within Minnesota’s Department of Human Services behavioral health services division. According to Anderson, OLA staff testified before a legislative committee about employees allegedly forging documents during an audit process. She reported questioning DHS Commissioner Shireen Gandhi about steps being taken to address these issues and asked for updates on related criminal investigations.

Anderson stated her support for bipartisan bills aimed at strengthening oversight through an Office of Inspector General and other fraud prevention measures. She urged these initiatives be prioritized during the current legislative session.

Looking ahead, Anderson encouraged constituents to contact her office with questions or concerns about ongoing legislative matters.
